Got up early and after breakfastwe had to repack the bags for the big bus trip. We purchased our tickets yesterday from a seller we found not far from the Hostel which was lucky because the bus station is quite a long way from the centre of town were we were staying. Tickets for the bus to Mexico city were quite pricey at $124AUD each but considering the distance it’s to be expected. Leaving today at 2.30pm from Campeche. Supposedly due at Mexico City 6.30am the next morning but from our previous experiences we expect it to be some time after that.
We had been planning on travelling to a town called San Cristobel De Las Casas which we had heard nice things about but with current time constraints it would have been a very long bus trip to only stay one night followed by the another day on the bus. Reading up on it, the town sounds a lot like Antigua but in the Mexican highlands. Decided to give it a miss and stay a second night in Campeche.
After checking out of the hostel we had some time to kill so we sat in the park for a while and watched the world go by. Lots of pidgeons in the trees and some workmen were attaching Christmas lights to the trees.
Currently it’s 10.15pm and we have been on the bus for almost 8 hours. Pretty boring trip as there has been little scenery. Drove alongside the Gulf of Mexico for a while and saw lots of Pelicans. Went over a couple of long causeway/bridges near Playa del Carmen but since it got dark there’s nothing to look at.
We were expecting the bus to be “first class” service but on boarding we think maybe it’s the “Luxury” class. On boarding we passed a drinks stand at the door and were offered water or a can of soft drink and were given earphones to plug into the set rest to listen to the movies. We have drink holders and fully reclining seats. There are separate ladies and gents toilets at the back. They have been running back-to-back movies as well. The first was The Illusionist with Edward Norton in English with Spanish subtitles but the rest have been dubbed Spanish. Not the best selection either; Milo and Otis, Highschool Musical 2 and Daddy Day Camp is playing now.
Started and finished a cheesy romance novel Sarah swapped for an unneeded book back at the hostel .
Bored….
10.30pm …. Only another 8 hours to go! Or maybe more if our previous experience with bus timetables is anything to go by.
